How important is career counselling for students?

Career counselling removes guesswork. It replaces pressure and hearsay with data, clarity and a plan the student actually owns.

Most students in India choose a stream based on three things: marks, peer pressure and family expectation. Aptitude and interest — the two factors that actually predict long-term success — rarely enter the conversation.

Career counselling changes that order. A good session begins with assessment, moves to exploration, and only then discusses colleges and courses. The student leaves with a shortlist they understand and can defend.

The second benefit is confidence. Uncertainty is exhausting; a clear plan with a backup option lowers anxiety for both the student and the parents.

The third is money. Choosing the wrong course costs three to four years of fees and, more importantly, time. One counselling session is a very small investment against that risk.

Counselling is not about someone telling a student what to become. It is about giving them enough clarity to decide well.
